Although now well-entrenched in the fruitful modern-rock hotbed of Montreal, Canada, the indie-pop quartet Stars was actually formed in New York. But it wasnt until the band moved to Montreal that it issued its 2001 full-length debut, Nightsongs. The follow-up, Heart, was a critical hit and sold well north of the border. 2005s Set Yourself on Fire further stoked the embers of their growing cult fanbase, with Entertainment Weekly memorably pegging it as sort of an indie-pop Rumours, sans the wooden balls. The Buckingham/Nicks-era Fleetwood Mac reference is appropriate, given that Stars beautifully orchestrated sound is driven by the back-and-forth, male/female dueting of co-vocalists Torquil Campbell and Amy Millan. Last falls In Our Bedroom After the War found the group confidently diving into full-on chamber pop. With In Our Bedroom, Stars are rewriting the textbook on romance with effortless glee, enthused New Musical Express, while Alternative Press observed that the band have finally created songs as big as their love-and-death themes.
