This might be the year of MGMT. The Brooklyn electro-rockers, who sound like what might happen if the Flaming Lips rubbed shoulders with the Beta Band, have been one of the most buzzed about groups of the year, even if they arent exactly new. Members Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden formed their outfit while they were students at Wesleyan in 2002, but their big break came in 2005 when U2 associate/producer/A&R guy Steve Lillywhite heard one of their EPs and signed them to Columbia. They set out recording tunes with producer Dave Fridmann of Mercury Rev, which formed the basis of their 2007 debut full-length, Oracular Spectacular. Since its release, the albums colorful, psychedelic patchwork has found MGMT fans across the U.S. and beyond. And they can recreate its lush sounds live, too, having recently expanded to a five piece. |
