Old Line Skiffle Combo
Rockabilly
|
Silver Spring, Maryland. Liverpool, England. 3515.5 miles in-between. Can such a disparate distance weave a common thread? For those well-versed in music history, the answer arrives positively, wrapped in a simple, one-word package: Skiffle. A product of the 1950s, with such early consumers as The Beatles (then known as The Quarrymen), Skiffle distinctively blends rockabilly, folk, ragtime, and blues. Its diverse tradition continues today, halfway across the globe, with the Old Line Skiffle Combo. The band-comprised of vocalist Jason Hicks, guitarist Steve Knight, bassist Louie Newmyer, drummer Mark Pettijohn, washboardist Maynard Sheppard, and banjoist Thommy Burns-creates their folksy beat at every possible opportunity. They call the Washington Folk Festival, the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekender, and the Rockin' 50s Fest familiar stages. In September 2009, the Old Line Skiffle Combo will return to their second home-Bristol's 9th annual Rhythm & Roots Reunion. |
